ALCMI Update

Earlier this year, we were proud to contribute $15,000 to the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI).

On July 31st, ALCMI announced the execution of a letter of intent to collaborate with Response Genetics, Inc.   The collaboration will include molecular diagnostic testing and the banking of advanced stage lung cancer tissues.

Early Intervention

Resource Center

Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) has launched its new online Early Interventions Resource Center, a comprehensive guide providing a better understanding of lung cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages by addressing lung cancer risk, early detection, surgical treatments and upcoming research.

Located at www.lungcanceralliance.org/eirc/, the Early Interventions Resource Center addresses risks, testing methods and treatment options, providing detailed answers to three fundamental questions:

1. Am I at risk for lung cancer?  Learn about lung cancer risk factors. What do they mean for you? What should you do if you or someone you know is at high risk for the disease?

2. How can I find it early?  Learn about lung cancer early detection. Where can you go for testing?  What questions should you ask? What follow-up is needed? What is the future of early detection research?

3. What are my treatment options?  Learn about all treatment options for lung cancer. Should I get surgery? Where should I go for treatment? What treatments are right for me?

Young Investigator

Research Grants

The National Lung Cancer Partnership is pleased to announce their 5th annual research grant competition. This year, four 2-year $100,000 awards are available to clinical and basic science fellows and junior faculty to advance their research in lung cancer etiology, prevention, early detection, treatment, and symptom management. Three grants will be co-funded with the LUNGevity Foundation, with the assistance of Genentech and Sanofi-Aventis, and one grant will be funded by the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership.

The grant application can be found here.

Quote of the Month

“When I realized that 60% of the newly diagnosed cases of lung cancer were either in people who quit smoking decades ago, or never started at all, I really thought: 'I need to look into this genetic issue a little bit more'. I did some random checking and research; talking to people and what have you, and now there is a consensus.”

The New Face of Lung Cancer
An excellent profile has been produced for a great organization, The V Foundation for Cancer Research.  Sadly, Emily's story is becoming much more common...
