The Hummingbird Times
The Official Newsletter of The Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation

Volume 1, Issue 1                                                                                             August 2008

Welcome!

Welcome to the first issue of The Hummingbird Times.  We hope you will find it informative as we keep you up to date on the fight against the #1 cancer killer in the world.  You can learn more about us here

Fact of the Month
You do not have to smoke to get lung cancer.  Over 60% of new cases are diagnosed in those who have quit smoking years ago or who have never touched a cigarette in their lives.  And this number is rising.

In Your Neighborhood

We will be in various places around Atlanta and North Georgia in the coming months, spreading the news and raising awareness.

On Friday, Septemer 19th, and Saturday, September 20th, we will have a booth at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Fall Festival in Blairsville, Georgia.

Visit our Event Calendar to see where we'll be next...

Volunteer
We are always looking for volunteers to help us spread the word in a variety of ways.  If you are interested in volunteer opportunities and live the Atlanta area, contact us at gaetafoundation@gmail.com.

Other ways to help can be found here.

Early Detection

Right now, the best weapon in the fight against lung cancer is early detection. When lung cancer is detected early, it can be curable. Currently, the best early detection mechanism is a CT Lung Cancer Screening.

The Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation is proud to have a close relationship with the folks at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.  Chief of Staff Paul Scheinberg, MD, FCCP is a member of our board of directors.  Alice Kerber, RN, MN, AOCN is also a board member and is Saint Joseph's Oncology Nurse Navigator for their CT Lung Cancer Screening program.

Learn more here, or call 404-851-5175 for more information.  You can also e-mail canscreen@sjha.org.  It could save a life.

The Second Annual Dancing for Joan is slated for

Saturday, February 21st, 2009.  Save the date!

This is our cornerstone event and it is a festive evening of cocktails, dinner, dancing, silent auction…and a call to action in the fight against lung cancer.  Our inaugural event was a great success!  You can read about it here.

2009 will be even better – and we are currently accepting corporate sponsorships and donations.

If your employer is interested in a sponsorship package, please contact us at gaetafoundation@gmail.com.

JGLCF Supports LCA Georgia

Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) is a national organization based in Washington, D.C. that is dedicated to reversing decades of stigma and neglect by empowering lung cancer patients, elevating awareness, and changing health policy.  The LCA is working hard to get Congress to adequately fund lung cancer research and to allow lung cancer patients access to the same level of care as patients of other diseases.

The Georgia chapter, led by Ed and Linda Levitt, supports this effort by focussing on the Georgia State Legislature.  Its work has been applauded by Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), who wrote and passed S.R.620 supporting Lung Cancer Awareness Month.  The Chapter also secured a proclamation from Governor Sonny Perdue declaring November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Georgia.

Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, The Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation was able to give $5,000 to the Georgia chapter of the Lung Cancer Alliance earlier this year.  We are very proud to have done so and again thank those who support our foundation.

Lung Cancer Alliance - Georgia has earmarked our donation for the Atlanta Lung Cancer Run and Walk...

...the 4th Annual Atlanta Lung Cancer Awareness Run & Walk is scheduled for Saturday, November 8th, 2008 at the Concourse in Dunwoody (near Perimeter Mall).

Presented by Saint Joseph’s Hospital and the Lung Cancer Alliance – Georgia, the Run & Walk is fun for the whole family and a great way to raise awareness, to educate, and to support the cause.

As the date approaches and registration is opened, our web site will be updated with more details, including how you can register with our team, “Jogging for Joan”.

At age 63, Joan Gaeta picked up a paintbrush for the first time in her life.

Aside from a few watercolor classes, she was predominately self-taught. It is a testament to her talent and dedication that we were able to auction off "Shades of Evening
" at our inaugural fund raiser.

2009 Wall Calendars featuring her artwork will be available soon.  Additionally, we will have stationery  (note cards, holiday cards) availalbe for purchase.  All proceeds will help our foundation spread the word and raise awareness.

To inquire, please contact Theresa Andretta at tga1210@bellsouth.net

You can also check out www.watercolorsbyjoan.org for updates when they are available  -  and to preview some of Joan's work.

Friends of Joan
Our foundation was established in honor of Joan Gaeta.  However, as the #1 cancer killer in the world, it goes without saying that lung cancer touches the lives of millions of people.

Our web site also offers profiles of lung cancer survivors, victims, and their families...and how this disease has impacted them.  This is provided as a way to honor loved ones lost, to encourage those who are fighting the disease, and to put faces and stories behind the statistics.

If you have a  story or anecdote that you'd like to share, or if you would just like to honor a loved one, please contact us at gaetafoundation@gmail.com.

Web Site 3.0

www.forjoan.org, our redesigned web site, launched in July and is chock full of information, including facts about the disease, the benefits of early detection, ways you can help the cause, and much more.  Visit us often!

(Hey!  What's with the hummingbird, anyway?)
